We are highly likely to experience renovation or house moving at least once in our lives, and I’m sure we all know how troublesome the entire process is- especially if you are the only one with a heavy vehicle license amongst your friends.

That said, we were often taught to avoid renovation and house moving during the 7th Lunar Month at all costs as it is the “Ghost Month”. So, just how true is it that we must avoid renovating and moving house during the 7th Lunar Month?

Let’s take a look at the various myths surrounding the matter.

1) You will invite unclean things into your house

From what we’ve observed, this the most common reason people will give when it comes to moving house during the 7th Lunar Month. Somehow, we have been indoctrinated to believe that we will invite spirits into our humble abode should we move house during this month.

We’re here to tell you that it’s perfectly okay to move house during the 7th Lunar Month. If you’re still worried, simply arrange for an auspicious date with your fengshui Master for you to move. You may even bring in good fortune for the entire family!

2) You may anger the spirits

Legend has it that spirits might haunt you if you were to disturb their rest due to your renovation works. Though, we’re pretty sure that you’ll be more concerned about your angry neighbours instead.

Once again, renovating during the 7th Lunar Month is no cause for concern. And if you’re a married man like me, you’ll know better than to delay renovation works and risk invoking the wrath of your wife.

3) Why the 7th Lunar Month?

With the above being said, why do people avoid major activities during the 7th Lunar Month?

As mentioned before, the change in temperature is rather significant during the 7th Lunar Month. As such, people in the past try their best not to hold any major activities during this month to avoid the heat and being swarmed by mosquitoes and various bugs.

For reasons lost to the ages, people somehow managed to correlate the two and the myth of not renovating/moving house during the 7th Lunar Month was born.

4) For your peace of mind

If you’re Chinese by descent, myths of the 7th Lunar Month are probably deeply rooted in your mind. Or that of your parents’, for the matter. So it might be better for you to adhere to the myths just for the peace of mind.
