What is landform fengshui?
Long before written records, natural landscapes shaped where early Chinese communities chose to settle. Landform fengshui is the study of how natural terrain such as mountains, rivers and valleys influences the flow of qi (energy) and a site’s vitality and fortune. When properly aligned, they are believed to shape prosperity and harmony across generations.
A subset of landform fengshui, a dragon landform is one of the most auspicious and symbolic landform types. It refers to a specific terrain that resembles the shape and flow of a dragon, typically comprising a head, body and tail.
In this article, we focus on the Dragon’s body, which is often associated with undulating terrain such as rolling hills, ridges or meandering rivers. It should be continuous, not broken or jagged, in order to ensure a smooth flow of qi. That brings us to the four distinct fengshui formations, at and near the Central Dragon’s body.
Each area pulses with nurturing energy, stability and abundance. They are the “General Desk” at Bukit Panjang, “Heavenly Horse Galloping Across the Sky” and “Moon Shining in Unison” at Bukit Timah, “Kirins Meeting on Orchid Land” at Tanglin and “Land of Seven Falling Stars” at Orchard.
Let’s explore what these fengshui formations represent, how they shape the environment and what they mean for those who live, work or invest here.

Four fengshui formations near the Central Dragon’s body
Bukit Panjang

Located near to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Central Water Catchment area, Bukit Panjang is primarily a residential town named for the “long hill” that runs through it. Formerly known as Zhenghua, this area was historically an agricultural region with rural settlements. Activities like quarrying and farming significantly altered the original landscape.
Today, Bukit Panjang’s relatively affordable housing and proximity to nature are major factors that appeal to new homebuyers. As mentioned earlier, a “dragon’s body” can represent stability, balance and long-term growth, thereby benefiting those who reside nearby. Could this be why property agents often describe Bukit Panjang as “confirm sell” territory?

Bukit Panjang fengshui formation: General Desk

From a fengshui perspective, the presence of a well-skilled general gives rise to the “General’s Desk” formation in Bukit Panjang. The area near the hill is designated as the desk, while the hill represents the general’s flag. Further down near Bukit Panjang Road, stand blocks of flats that strategically form a fort. Interestingly, the orientation of the flats here is of the Earth element (i.e. Southeast, Northeast). With this and the influence of the righteous general, most residents are honest and down-to-earth.
Nevertheless, it is advisable to take note of one’s temper and avoid being too stubborn. Also, pay attention to gastrointestinal and cervical illnesses. With its pleasant climate and environment, Bukit Panjang is suitable for families or conventional businesses. It is also an ideal place for nurturing the next generation.
Bukit Timah

As Singapore’s tallest hill, Bukit Timah marks the highest point of our island nation, offering a rare slice of rainforest in the city! Many of you know that Bukit Timah Hill was once a quarrying site, but did you know that Bukit Timah was a key transport and trade corridor? It was especially so after the construction of Bukit Timah Road! Plantations, including gambier, pepper and rubber estates, used to thrive here.
At present, Bukit Timah is widely regarded as one of Singapore’s most prestigious residential districts, home to Good Class Bungalows (GCBs), luxurious condos and reputable schools. You may have come across recent news on property launches such as 8@BT and The Sen that have seen healthy sales! Now, you may be wondering if this has anything to do with fengshui …
Here’s our take: From a landform fengshui perspective, this could be attributed to the propitious land being near to the Central Dragon’s body, which promotes education and long-term growth. Stretching 17 milestones, Bukit Timah houses two unique fengshui formations at the 3rd and 7th Mile respectively.
Bukit Timah 3rd Mile fengshui formation: Sun and Moon Shining in Unison

This part of Bukit Timah has a fengshui formation named “Sun and Moon Shining in Unison”. The “sun” sits at Hwa Chong Institution while the “moon” is originally situated at the old campus of Nanyang Girls’ High School. Representing the male gender, the sun land is a yang land, characterised by resoluteness and sincerity. The moon land (representing female) is a yin land with features like gentleness and prudence.
In 1999, Nanyang Girls’ High School was relocated to the current campus at Linden Drive, which altered the entire fengshui formation. Now that the two campuses are opposite each other, it denotes potential intensifying competition between the genders.
Bukit Timah 7th Mile fengshui formation: Heavenly Horse Galloping Across the Sky

Adjacent to the “General Land” in Bukit Panjang, this part of Bukit Timah comprises the necessary accompaniment of a general: a galloping horse. The fengshui formation here is named “Heavenly Horse Galloping Across the Sky”. In the past, one could hear the frequent rock blasts coming from the quarry site at Bukit Timah Hill, and these are akin to the sounds produced by a galloping horse.
The quarry is a thing of the past, and the galloping sounds are gone. The “Horse Saddle” sits on a private residential area that shall aid those working in the public sector, but not the businessmen. Being a “Warrior Horse Saddle”, businessmen striving for success need to maintain a strong fighting spirit and work harder.
Besides the saddle is a “Horse Manger”, which beholds the possibility of miracles! Wondering what that means for residents or people working in the vicinity? You may be a fit for Way Academy’s fengshui courses. WhatsApp us to find out more!
Tanglin

The year was 1854. The house of Singapore’s 1st lawyer, William Napier, was constructed and named Tang Leng, after the area’s Chinese name twa tang leng, meaning “great east hill peaks”. This hilly terrain is what we know as Tanglin today, which comprises Leonie, Cluny, Emerald, Mount Elizabeth, Claymore, Nassim and Goodwood hills.
In fengshui, hills and mountains are crucial for creating a supportive environment, symbolising protection, stability and backing. This complements with its location near the Central Dragon’s body, spelling prosperity. Could this be why Tanglin has so many established residences, luxury apartments and condominiums? This prime district also boasts five-star hotels, embassies, consulates and high commissions of various countries. Let us delve further into its fengshui formation.
Tanglin fengshui formation: Kirins Meeting on Orchid Land

Tanglin’s landform fengshui reflects a “Kirins Meeting on Orchid Land”. As its name suggests, this land comprises both the kirins and orchid.
Kirin land, orchid land and golden bell land are categorised as lands of scholars. There are two kirins: one located at the former NIE campus and the other at the Shangri-La Hotel. Although NIE has shifted to a new campus, the grounds of the “Scholarly Kirin” continue to be used for educational purposes, which fit its innate properties, allowing those in the area to thrive.
Located at Shangri-La, the “Prosperity Kirin” is capable of attracting wealth and treasures. From this, we can infer that the hotel’s continued success is due to the beneficial fengshui factors. Nearby, 21 Anderson, a new ultra-luxury freehold boutique residence, shall also benefit from this. Lastly, the orchids are scattered throughout the Tanglin area, with the region where embassies and consulates gather being more intense.
Going beyond education, the Tanglin district is also ideal for culture and arts developments. With hard work comes great reward. Individuals are encouraged to put in effort and carve a niche. Tanglin is a propitious land that highlights the need to specialise. In doing so, one can achieve success and fame in one’s selected field.

Mention Orchard Road, and the first thing that comes to mind would likely be the bustling shopping street known for its luxury malls and fashion finds. It can be hard to fathom that Orchard Road started out as a small country lane in the 1830s. Back then, the area was thriving with nutmeg, spice plantations and orchards that is its namesake.
While the areas surrounding Orchard Road were developed for residential purposes (think private houses and bungalows!) in the mid-19th century, major developments only began in the 1960s! The popular tourist and shopping belt that we are familiar with came up only in the 1970s. So, how exactly did this small country lane (of all places) evolve into Singapore’s premier shopping and entertainment destination?
Orchard Road fengshui formation: Land of Seven Falling Stars

Orchard Road reflects the “Land of Seven Falling Stars” formation, which synchronises with the arrangement of the Big Dipper.
This formation can be categorised into North or South. The former when applied in China denotes benefits to the public sector whereas the latter denotes positive influences for businesses. As Singapore belongs to the Southern hemisphere, it indicates that the formation at Orchard Road is advantageous to businesses.
Constant renewal is required to guarantee the district’s flourishing trades and services, whilst residents in this prime area can consider redecorating your home or renovation from time to time.
We have been seeing positive news regarding new launch condos such as UpperHouse at Orchard Boulevard, The Avenir and Klimt Cairnhill in the Orchard precinct. Are you staying in one of these properties or planning to purchase? Herein lies the Central Dragon’s torso, indicating stability and abundance. Homes here can benefit from the positive qi, if in alignment with the dragon’s flow. Orchard is ideal for career-driven individuals or families seeking upward mobility and social connection.
