Landform Fengshui of Singapore
Our nation’s remarkable success is often attributed to its favourable geographical features. According to landform fengshui, Singapore is graced with the presence of hidden dragons, each representing a region that contributes unique energy to Singapore’s growth.
Think about the energy of Marina Bay—why does it feel so alive? The secret lies in the time-honored principles of fengshui and we are here to spill the tea!
Before we delve into “hidden dragons” in Singapore, you should know about the traditional Chinese practice that analyses the natural landscape and its influence on human life. Landform fengshui studies mountains, ridges and rivers that affect energy flow (qi) in an area.
What Are Dragons in Fengshui?
In fengshui, dragons symbolise powerful, dynamic energy and are often associated with landforms. Dragons also represent protection, prosperity, and vitality. A “dragon vein” (龙脉) refers to the flow of qi through natural or man-made features that nourish a location.
Grand Master Tan Khoon Yong – veteran fengshui practitioner and founder of Way Fengshui – believes that Singapore’s fengshui is shaped by the “Five Dragons”, extended from Kunlun Mountain to form our city’s qi landscape. Here’s how it all begin:

There is a saying: “Kunlun Mountain is the origin of all mountains”, and it is believed to be the ultimate source of qi. One of the mountain ranges spanned from North to South, passing through Yunnan in China, and Thailand, to Malaysia where it formed the Land of Carp. The “pearl” that disgorged from this carp is identified to be Singapore!
Shaped by natural forces, Borneo lies on the East, Sumatra on the West, Java at the South and the Malay Peninsular at the North – creating a natural protection that gave form to a wealth basin. This wealth basin formation might be small but it is the dwelling place of five auspicious dragons.

At this point, you may be wondering: What do dragons have to do with a highly urbanised city like Singapore? With limited natural landforms, cities like ours rely on “hidden dragons”—man-made structures and urban features that mimic traditional energy flows.
These hidden dragons include roads and expressways (acting as “dragon veins” for energy flow), skyscrapers (symbolic “mountain dragons” providing stability), and waterways and reservoirs (wealth-attracting “water dragons”).
In Singapore, we have the five auspicious dragons, namely the Eastern Dragon, Western Dragon, Southern Dragon, Northern Dragon, and Central Dragon. Along with two Water Dragons (Singapore River and Kallang River), their congregation marks mutual support that underlies the dynamic growth and prosperity of Singapore.
Each dragon represents a region with unique characteristics that contribute to the nation’s prosperity. Wondering about the ‘Dragon’ in your hood? Read on!
Western Dragon in Singapore

Nestled within the western part of Singapore, the mysterious Western Dragon forms a screen that complements with the mountain ranges of nearby Sumatra and Malaysia. This formed the “Three Screens Protecting The King” fengshui formation, securing the fengshui of Singapore.
Also known as the Guardian Dragon, the Western Dragon is associated with the Metal element, symbolising resilience and innovation. This aligns with the development of industrial and high-tech hubs like Jurong Industrial Estate, Singapore Science Park, and One-North, etc.
The terrain in the West region is hilly and undulated, with Pearl’s Hill being identified as the location of the Dragon Head. The coverage of the Western Dragon extends from Lim Chu Kang all the way to Sentosa Island.
Central Dragon in Singapore

The dragon veins of the Central Dragon and Southern Dragon can be traced back to Kota Tinggi in Malaysia. Travelling in parallel, the two dragons encircle the three major reservoirs of Singapore, namely the Seletar Reservoir, Pierce Reservoir and MacRitchie Reservoir.
Due to its speed, the Central Dragon bypassed Woodlands and Mandai, resulting in slower developments within these districts in our nation-building period. On a more positive note, the great momentum of the Central Dragon benefits areas at the later part of its journey such as Bukit Timah and the Orchard district.
Representing the Earth element, the Central Dragon signifies affluence where premium housing estates and upscale business districts thrive under its coverage from Marina Bay to Woodlands. The location of this Dragon Head lies in Fort Canning Park.
Southern Dragon in Singapore

An affinity between the Southern Dragon and Central Dragon saw the two companions looking out for each other, as they travelled alongside three reservoirs prior to the Southern Dragon emerging at Mount Emily.
The Southern Dragon – also known as the Wealth Dragon – tends to favour residential and commercial developments over culture and education. Nonetheless, cultural and arts activities represent a form of cultivation for the population.
Associated with the Fire element, the Southern Dragon can be fast-paced and unpredictable. The terrain is akin to a rolling mountain, extending from Mount Emily to Sembawang, with various lands transformed from cemeteries to residential estates.
Eastern Dragon in Singapore

Meandering along the eastern part of Singapore, the Eastern Dragon covers a generally flat terrain that gave it the title “Dragon of the Plains”. In the absence of tall mountains, this vast and flat hinterland possesses great potential for one to soar into the sky.
Coincidentally, there are three airports residing on the Eastern Dragon. They are: Seletar Airport, Paya Lebar Air Base and the world-renowned Changi Airport that happens to be located on the dragon head.
Associated with the Wood element, the Eastern Dragon benefits culture, education, agriculture and fishery. From Changi, it covers the east region all the way to Punggol and Sengkang.
Northern Dragon in Singapore

Cruising in the straits between Singapore and Malaysia, the low-key Northern Dragon reflects the shortest dragon vein among the five dragons. Its back surfaces at Pulau Ubin and its head has been spotted at Pulau Tekong.
Being the “Dragon of Defence”, it carries the responsibility of stabilising the dragon qi. Hence, there are limitations to developing sections of the Northern Dragon.
How Can These Dragons Influence You?
These hidden dragons shape Singapore’s landscape, but did you know they can also impact your career, relationships, and financial well-being?
Imagine living in an area with strong dragon energy—could it enhance your success? Many businesses and individuals have tapped into fengshui insights to optimise their environment.
For example, business owners in Jurong have seen greater innovation, while residents in Orchard benefit from affluent energy flows. What could your dragon bring you?
Want to Unlock the Secrets of Fengshui?

The abovementioned “Hidden Dragons in Singapore” are derived from two key fengshui concepts: Luan Tou (峦头) and Li Qi (理气) also known as the Form School and Compass School respectively.
The Form School focuses on interpreting physical surroundings like hills, rivers, and buildings to identify auspicious spots while the Compass School explores the unseen forces, including wind and water, which influence well-being and fortune.
For example, a U-shaped building like Sentosa Cove is considered auspicious because it “gathers” energy, while a flat-fronted condo might let it slip away. On the other hand, the Compass School deals with the invisible forces of fengshui, such as directions, timing, and the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water).
Together, these two approaches provide a holistic approach to understanding and harnessing energy in any space.
