Events and happenings within a space create energy vibrations that can either be positive or negative. Hence, it makes sense to understand the history of your to-be neighbourhood, especially recent happenings that could leave traces of remnant energies.  

Obstructive landforms

Prior to selecting your house or flat, take a walk in the estate and take note of the features of surrounding buildings that may harbour threats of negative influences or hinder ventilation within your home. 

The main idea is to garner and ensure the smooth flow of positive Qi (energy) within your new home while avoiding Sha Qi (negative energies).

If there are sharp edges pointed towards your potential home, then it is best to consider another unit instead. Some common obstructive landforms include sharp corners of nearby buildings, T-junctions, expressways, train station, construction sites, etc.

The main orientation of a house will directly influence the overall luck of its residents. The house orientation refers to the facing of your house, which can be measured from the main entrance where qi flows in.

North and South are generally auspicious directions in the upcoming Periods 9 and 1 (years 2024 – 2063). However, it is important to note that there is no fixed lucky direction that caters to everyone. 

As such, you should consider seeking advice from a professional fengshui practitioner to determine a house orientation that complements your Bazi, and that of your spouse. 

Other considerations for your new house orientation include the amount and timing of sunlight and ventilation, as these would affect your comfort level and the flow of qi at home. 

Having an open space in front of the main door or one that you can overlook can be advantageous, as that aids in accumulating positive energies which can flow into your home.

Qi tends to stagnate in cluttered or busy spaces, and it moves slower if there are obstacles (remember obstructive landforms that we discussed in point 1?). An open space in front of the house separates your home from other buildings and creates a welcoming path for positive energy.

3. Check the layout of the house

As architects create increasingly creative and aesthetically-pleasing residential properties in the past decade, the layout of homes have shifted to include odd shapes and layout that sometimes compromise on home fengshui. Beauty is important, but let’s not forget the intangible benefits of good home fengshui.

Shape of the home

Take a closer look at your floor plan and be mindful of a layout with an irregular shape, as that could have a negative impact on your household’s health, in addition to being an interior designer’s headache. 

Ideally, your home layout should be square or rectangular so that it’s free from missing corners and more well-balanced. This will also ensure the smooth flow of qi within the home, as compared to one with an irregularly-shaped layout.

Centre point of the home

In classical fengshui studies, a home is divided into 9 sectors, where it will be used to determine the fengshui structure of the house and whether the rooms are harmonised.  

The centre point of your home, aka the Central Palace, represents emotional stability within the household. This space should be a passive sector where qi flow is subtle and peaceful, so as to allow household members to enjoy emotional stability. Note that a kitchen, toilet or stove should not be located in the center of the property.

Other taboos to note

• The main door should not face the kitchen or toilet door directly. 
• The bedroom or stove should not be directly located under a toilet 
• The bedroom door  facing the toilet door directly may cause health or wealth issues; 
• And more

Although there’s no perfect home, it is important to identify the sectors and avoid certain houses with fengshui taboos prior to your purchase. Otherwise, additional efforts and costs will be required to rectify the issues which you could have avoided.

4. The height of your house matters

You’ve probably heard of most people’s preference to get a home at a higher floor – be it for better ventilation or a good view.

Here in densely populated Singapore, there are more high-rise apartments than landed properties, and there’s a merit to it.  From the fengshui aspect, the higher you are staying, there’s a lesser chance of encountering certain fengshui conflicts. 

For example, premises at higher levels would not have the problem of facing multi-storey car parks – typically 4 or 5 storeys high – which may bring forth disturbance and negative energies. T-junction roads (mentioned earlier) are one of the common landform obstructions that could bring Sha Qi, but one would not be affected if your home is located on a higher floor.

A building’s height is an important consideration when selecting an ideal property. Opting for apartments on higher floors helps to reduce the likelihood of encountering negative forces. Nevertheless, do note that there are challenges to accumulating auspicious energies.
