Public housings designed and constructed by the Housing & Development Board (HDB) are now comparable to the private condominiums, in terms of their exterior and interior design. Fernvale Rivergrove, located along Fernvale Link, is one good example.

Fernvale Rivergrove lies on the Eastern Dragon and is situated in Singapore’s northeastern part, which is one of most auspicious directions in feng shui Period 8 (Year 2003 – 2024).

Just as its name implies, Fernvale Rivergrove is near the river, Sungei Punggol. Among the ten blocks, there are some units in 471C, 472A, 472B, 472C and 472D that overlook the scenic Sengkang Riverside Park. Feng shui emphasizes on “nature”, thus living near the nature is a plus point for good feng shui. However, these units face the East and West, which are not in favour in Period 8. This will inevitably affect the health, career and academic aspect of the residents. Feng shui adjustments are suggested to rectify this unfavourable situation.

Other than the units mentioned above, the facing directions of the rest of the blocks are considered favourable. The North and South-facing units are the most auspicious ones:

  • Block 470B (Unit 436, 438, 440, 442)
  • Block 470C (Unit 420, 422, 424, 426)
  • Block 471A (Unit 87, 89, 91, 93)
  • Block 471B (Unit 107, 109, 111, 113)
  • Block 471C (Unit 71, 73, 75, 77)
  • Block 473A (Unit 17, 19, 21, 23)

There are a total of 1728 units at Fernvale Rivergrove. Judging from the exterior design of the blocks, majority of the units are square-shaped, with no missing corners.

Not only is Fernvale Rivergrove near nature elements like the river and hill, facilities like schools, LRT stations and community centre can be found in the vicinity too. With the completion of the Sengkang General and Community Hospitals in the near future, residents at Fernvale Rivergrove will then have access to a comprehensive range of healthcare services.

Recently, there is a controversy over the building of a temple and columbarium at Fernvale Link. This could be due to a saying in feng shui that states that having a temple in front of the house indicates poverty; at the rear of the house indicates wealth; on the left and right of the house indicates widowhood.

Temples are where devotees gather and perform acts of worship, thus will congregate a strong force of energy that may cause qi imbalance to the surroundings. It is also believed that temples will attract spirits and ghosts, making the are a unfavourable for long-term dwellers.

But, how true are these? Actually, concluding the qi condition based on the temple alone is not an inclusive move. To evaluate the auspiciousness of an area, we need to consider factors like the house facing, distance from the temple, luck cycle of the residents etc.

Moreover, with so many people staying together within the blocks, the yang energy gathered is strong enough to ward off the yin energy from the temple.

In conclusion, there is no definite answer as to whether the temple will cause negative influence to the feng shui of the residences. An on-site assessment for each unit is needed to determine the effects of the temple on the dwelling.

Among the various blocks at Fernvale Rivergrove, 470A (especially unit 400 & 402) is nearest to the temple. Fortunately, they face the Northeast, which is auspicious in Period 8. Hence, even if any negative influence is present, things should be fine till year 2024.
