Bishan Finally has a Hill! If you live Here, You’ve got to See This.

Bishan doesn’t have any particularly obvious mountains or hills – so why was it named after the Chinese for “Blue Mountain”? Turns out, “Bishan” originated from the Chinese name for “Blue Mountain Pavilion”. From our understanding, Bishan Pavilion was built in 1870 by immigrants from China’s Guangdong province, who congregated here and also buried their kin here. In the early 70s, the government decided to acquire the land around Bishan to develop Bishan New Town. The graves here were exhumed and cremated. In order to preserve the local Cantonese culture here, the “Blue Mountain Pavilion” management leased a plot of land from the government to build a modern columbarium.

What? Bishan was once a cemetery? Yep, the older generation of Singaporeans all know this. If you live in Bishan and weren’t aware of this…are you afraid now? Instead of feeling scared, you should rejoice! As we all know, the Chinese attach great importance to filial piety and respect for elders; this is embodied in descendants’ eagerness to find a location with great feng shui that would allow their anscestors to rest in peace. Since Bishan was once a cemetery, it naturally has outstanding feng shui, with home prices to match. Orchard Road, which similarly was a cemetery, has pretty eye-popping property and rental prices! This once again proves that burial grounds have excellent environments and feng shui layouts. Of course, I must stress that all graves must be cleanly exhumed and the land must be left undisturbed for at least 10 years before being redeveloped.

From a Landform feng shui perspective, Bishan belongs to a “Monkey Playing with Water” formation. “Monkey” refers to Bishan, while “water” refers to MacRitchie Reservoir and a tributary of Kallang River. This monkey’s “playing with water” can also mean “absorbing water”. Our surveys of the land show that Bishan is inhabitated by two troops of monkeys with vastly different personalities. Most of the monkeys are just like Sun Wukong: clever and vengeful. Hence, we could say that residents here have been influenced by the qi of this “monkey land” and are nimble-minded with strong comprehension skills and creativity. No wonder the Bishan area is home to top schools like Raffles Institution, Catholic High School and more.

Furthermore, Bishan is located on the body of the “Wealth Dragon”, the Western Dragon. This definitely helps with commercial and technological progress. Were these prestigious schools unknowingly drawn here by the “royal qi” of this area, or did the schools’ founders study feng shui before choosing this location? Both are equally probable, but either way, they’ve benefited from being in the “right place”! “Monkeys” may be prudent, but they’re also brash and impatient. Parents will need to be stricter and ensure that children abide by the rules and are properly educated so that they can make a name for themselves and accomplish greater things in future.

Also worth noting is that monkeys are free-spirited by nature, so choosing to live on this “hill” in Bishan comes as no surprise. Do you know about the
